چکیده

The extent of piracy for a specific digital good can be characterized by the laws of demand and supply. The music industry and its trade organization, the RIAA, have recognized this and taken aggressive steps to diminish demand as well as supply. In this study, we develop a model that describes the dynamics of demand and supply-side of piracy propagation. Using the model, we investigate the effect of anti-piracy measures on piracy. Our model of piracy propagation, a system of differential equations, incorporates characteristics of individuals‟ participation behavior and topological properties of P2P systems. We obtain a unique analytical solution of the model and analyze the key drivers of piracy propagation. In the empirical analysis we quantify the impact of anti-piracy measures that are administered prior to the official release of the song. We analyze two anti-piracy measures: the reduction of file supply and the reduction of file demand. The impact of a reduction of file supply is modest. Our results show that the removal of 1% of file supply about 6 weeks prior to the official song release date leads to a reduction of about 0.7% of cumulative file demand and 0.6% of cumulative file supply at the release date. However, the impact of a demand reduction is significantly greater. A decrease of 1% of file demand about 6 weeks prior to the release will cut about 1.57% of cumulative file demand and 0.6% of cumulative file supply at the release date. From a policy point of view, our results suggest that taking anti-piracy measure early on is important. In addition, and potentially more controversial, our results provide support to the notion that in order to reduce piracy, punishing end-users is more effective than efforts to control the supply of unauthorized music files.

Demand and Supply-side Dynamics of Piracy Diffusion in P2P Networks

Digital piracy, the sharing files of music on peer-to-peer (P2P) networks has been cited as the key threat to the music industry by distorting promoting plans of albums (Billboard.biz, 2009). To combat widespread digital piracy on file-sharing networks, the content industries have employed diverse anti-piracy strategies including pollution technologies and stronger copyright legislation for mus...

A reverse logistics chain mathematical model for a sustainable production system of perishable goods based on demand optimization

Sustainability in the supply chain means pushing the supply chain to focus on social, economic and environmental aspects, and addressing the existing problems in the traditional supply chain. Considering the importance of evaluating supply chain networks, especially in the field of perishable commodities, this paper aimed to design a mathematical model for the reverse supply chain of perishable...

مقایسه دو رویکرد توسعه سمت عرضه انرژی الکتریکی در مقابل مدیریت سمت تقاضا با روش سیستم های دینامیک

Population growth and industrial development cause the growth in electricity demand. Supply of this energy needs investment for installation of new power stations and more fuel consumption with different consequences. Furthermore, Demand side management is an approach to rationalize and reduce the rate of demand growth. With attention to the cause and effect nature in energy sector, interaction...

A model of brand competition for durable goods supply chains in a dynamic framework

Game theory is an efficient tool to represent and conceptualize the problems concerning conflict and competition. In recent years and especially for durable products, competition between domestic and foreign brands for gaining market share has received a considerable attention. This paper study electronic commerce concepts by differential game theory and introduce a novel and comprehensive mode...

Analyzing Bullwhip Effect in Supply Networks under Exogenous Uncertainty

This paper explains a model for analyzing and measuring the propagation of order amplifications (i.e. bullwhip effect) for a single-product supply network topology considering exogenous uncertainty and linear and time-invariant inventory management policies for network entities. The stream of orders placed by each entity of the network is characterized assuming customer demand is ergodic. In fa...
